The Ballard Locks Fish Ladder Project
In 2005 Nina Crampton an art teacher at Ballard’s Whittier Elementary school invited me to meet with her students for several weeks. They painted and marbled paper, then cut out salmon and seaweeds. I laminated and punched holes. The Army Core of Engineers helped install the fish and plants the kids created above the viewing platform at the fish ladder at the Ballard Locks in Seattle.
San Francisco Day School
I painted this mural in 1990 for the library at the SF Day School. The kids came in to talk to me about their favorite illustrated books, and together with them and the librarian we decided who to include. Then I painted 40 characters, each in the style of the original children’s book illustrators.
Ten years later, the eighth grade graduating class, who had grown up with the mural, wanted me to paint another one, as their departing gift for the computer room. The kids raised the money for the project themselves. All new characters-including Harry Potter!
